My Grandma's Green Bean Casserole

 Since I can remember this dish has been made each year for Thanksgiving and sometime Christmas. It is one of those dishes that fills the air of the house with memories of family cutting, chopping, baking and cooking in the kitchen together. Sitting around the table laughing, talking, giving thanks and enjoying great food. All the while I would sit secretly hoping there was enough of this left over for seconds. There was never any leftovers of it (after seconds, and sometimes thirds) and I would find myself scrapping the sides before washing the baking dish out. 

As the wonderful smell currently envelopes the house while I make this for the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Barracks event on base for the hubby's guys, my tummy and taste buds are going crazy! (I've doubled the recipe for this event and tend to add more bacon and cheese to it when I make it, this is the original recipe though).


Ingredients:
2 bags regular cut green beans
4-6 slices bacon chopped
3 inches of velvetta cheese cubed
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
4-6 mushrooms washed and sliced

Directions:
Pour Beans in hot water until completely thawed
Completely strain water from beans
Cut bacon into small pieces
Add soup, mushrooms, bacon and cheese to green beans
Get your hands dirty and mix it all together (remember to take off rings! I have cooked my rings before in with this meal!)
Bake for 60 min at 325 degrees

  13. Apparently I was raised under a rock, I've never had green bean casserole. I've heard of it, of course, but have never had it. I love green beans so you'd think I'd have been tempted, but the mushrooms stop me. The cream of mushroom soup too. Is there a tasty replacement for the soup? I might try it that way

  15. I have never made my green bean casserole this way! I make it for pretty much every event there is (also 7-layer salad). But I make it the lazy way - the way that's on the back of the Campbell's Cr. of Mush can. This is fabulous and I will be making this recipe. won't my relatives be surprised and happy when they taste this version!! Woot woot!! thanks so much!! You rock, girl!! xxoo

  16. Wow that looks yummy! I too am a cream of mushroom casserole maker so I like the idea of changing it up a bit. I would probably still have to add the fried onions though or my stepdaughter would be disappointed.

  17. That looks fantastic. I have never seen a green bean casserole made like this. Green bean casserole has been one those favorite foods my grandma makes during the holidays but not like this. Iam going to try this recipe.

  37. I don't know about the velveeta because we always end up with a few other cheesy dishes as well, but the fresh mushrooms and bacon would take this over the top...Thanks so much for sharing!

    ( I remember barrack events...and having single soldiers over for holidays when I lived overseas. we lived in Germany for most of the 90's, and when you are away from home for so long, you make your own "family" :)

Your version actually sounds a bit more appetizing than the original, not that it is bad, it's just that my whole family loves it and I was the official bringer of the green bean casserole and I think my brain just burned out when it came to mixing it all together :). I think the Velveeta will give it the extra kick I need it to have.

  74. I have never heard of this kind of green bean casserole before but I have had green bean casserole for every single major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter) of my life. This one sounds different (in a good way) and I may just try it (with turkey bacon of course) :)

  83. This is quite a bit different from the "green bean casserole" that I am used to. :-)

    My recipe is just green beans, with campbells cream of mushroom soup and crushed potato chips sprinkled over the top and baked.

  94. Sounds really good. We had to change our green bean casserole up a bit cause some family doesn't like mushrooms so we us cream of potato soup instead of cream of mushroom and it is just as good.
